Just like that, Mister Rogers — a character created by former minister Fred Rogers for the popular children’s TV series Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood — has reappeared in the public consciousness, thanks to both a 2018 documentary by Morgan Neville and an upcoming biopic that will see Tom Hanks take on the role of the beloved TV personality. But as you may have noticed, this week people have also started to refer to Mister Rogers as a “bisexual icon”? What on Earth could be behind that?
In a recent Twitter thread, YouTuber Cece Ewing talked about a recent conversation she had with her grandmother about how the Mister Rogers' Neighborhood host was, in fact, bisexual.
Anyway, wildest thing that’s happened to me lately is when I went to talk to my grandmother and she was like “did you know Mr. Rogers was bisexual?” and my gay ass, gay of the family, Miss Family Homosexual had to be like “he was WHAT?”— ProblemsofaBookNerd (@CeceEwing_) March 3, 2019
After she watched the new documentary, she read the Mr. Roger’s biography. Apparently he never used the word, but in an interview where he was asked if he was gay he said something like “I’m not gay, but I suppose if you look at attraction as a kind of line...— ProblemsofaBookNerd (@CeceEwing_) March 3, 2019
I would probably be somewhere in the middle” and like. WHAT.— ProblemsofaBookNerd (@CeceEwing_) March 3, 2019
Another Twitter user, Gabriel Lunesce, then cited an exerpt from The Good Neighbor, a biography about Rogers by author Maxwell King, where Rogers himself talked about his sexuality and being attracted to both men and women.
For everyone looking for a citation, it's in "The Good Neighbor" by King. Screenshot from Google books. pic.twitter.com/XMQxYwPUCX— Meandering Hermit (@GabrielLunesce) March 5, 2019
Of course, people were ecstatic at the prospect of Mister Rogers becoming the internet's new bi icon...

I can't believe Mr. Rogers is actually the Saint of Bisexuals, the kindest bisexual, the bisexual we all aspire to be as kind and loving as https://t.co/erqAXbFaqh— Bagel Club President (@stickonstarlite) March 5, 2019
